The Adirondack
Theatre Festival’s 13th summer season of new and contemporary
professional theater culminates with TICK…TICK…BOOM! an autobiographical
musical by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer of RENT, who
died tragically following that show’s dress rehearsal in 1996 at the age of
36. This season marks the end of Artistic Director Martha Banta and
Producing Director David Turner’s leadership of ATF 15 years after they
founded the company. Given the unique history which Ms. Banta and ATF
shared with Jonathan Larson, there could not be a more perfect way to
celebrate the end of one era for ATF, and the beginning of another.
Written in the late 1980s as Larson approached his 30th birthday,
TICK…TICK…BOOM! tells the story of a promising, young composer on the eve of
his 30th birthday. His girlfriend wants to get married, his best
friend is making big bucks in advertising, and he’s still waiting tables and
trying to write the great American musical before time, and, unbeknownst to
him, life passes him by. This version of TICK…TICK…BOOM! was rewritten
following Larson’s death with the consent of his family and ran Off-Broadway
in 2000.
TICK…TICK…BOOM! marks the return to ATF of Director Gabriel Barre who
directed the musical JOHN & JEN in ATF’s second season in 1996. Barre has
directed numerous Off Broadway and regional productions including THE WILD
PARTY, ALMOST MAINE, SUMMER OF ’42 and the recent National Tour of PIPPIN
for Goodspeed Musicals. The cast of TICK…TICK..BOOM! features Conlin Hanlon
in the lead role of Jonathan. Hanlon appeared at ATF’s Winter Benefit this
past January and has also appeared in the Broadway production of RENT and
the George Street Playhouse production of TICK…TICK…BOOM! Sarah Glendening
plays his girlfriend Susan (along with other roles) and has appeared in the
Broadway company of GOOD VIBRATIONS. Ryan Duncan, who plays his best friend
Michael (as well as other roles), was in the original cast of ALTAR BOYZ
Off-Broadway as well as National Tours of MAN OF LA MANCHA and FIDDLER ON
THE ROOF. The creative team also includes Musical Director Gary Adler
(Musical Director of AVENUE Q on Broadway, composer of ALTAR BOYZ Off
Broadway, composer of Johnny and the Sprites for The Disney Channel),
Set Designer David Esler, Lighting Designer and Glens Falls native Jason
Kantrowitz, Sound Designers Jill Duboff and Matt O’Hare, and Costume
Designer Isabel Rubio. The 4-piece on stage rock band includes Adler, Glens
Falls native Chris Reed Jr., Greg Verheyn, and Dan Davine.
For the Eighth year in a row, ATF is offering a “Pay What You Can” preview
performance - Thursday, July 19 8pm - as a thank you to the Glens Falls and
Queensbury municipal governments who support the Festival. Tickets will be
distributed beginning at 6pm on
Thursday, July 19 on a first-come basis at the Charles R. Wood Theater Box
Office, 207 Glens Street.
For the second year ATF’s pre-show wine tasting is back, taking place in the
Wood Theater’s balcony prior to the show, 7pm on WED July 25. The Wood
Theater’s neighbors at NY Wine Cork will host the tasting, with wines themed
to TICK…TICK…BOOM!, so patrons can expect at least one champagne! Wine
Tasting is $15 and can be reserved by calling the Box Office.
The Adirondack
Theatre Festival’s 13th season will run June 27 – July 28 at the
Charles R. Wood Theater, 207 Glen St. in downtown Glens Falls. The Box
