CHICAGO’S FAMED SECOND CITY COMES TO
RUTLAND’S PARAMOUNT THEATRE

Thursday, October 1 at 7:30 pm

Adirondack Theatre Festival, the region’s premiere professional summer theatre committed to new and contemporary theatre, will present Chicago’s legendary comedy theatre The Second City at the Paramount Theatre, 30 Center Street in Rutland, Vermont on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 7:30 p,. This one night only event celebrating The Second City’s 50th Anniversary will feature some of the best sketches, songs, and improvisations from The Second City’s fifty year history. The Second City is truly a Chicago landmark and a national treasure.

Tickets for The Second City are now on sale.  Tickets are $35.50 and $28.50 plus applicable service fees and can be purchased at the Paramount Box Office or over the phone at 802.775.0903 from 11am - 6pm Thursday - Friday and Saturday 10am - 2pm. Tickets may also be purchased at anytime at www.paramountlive.org.

According to ATF Producing Artistic Director, Mark Fleischer, this presentation is aimed at expanding the company’s presence and commitment to the region at large. “It is an honor to be invited to host The Second City’s 50th Anniversary Tour. As we complete our 15th season we are looking for unique ways to expand our ability to provide the region the very best in live theatrical entertainment. The Second City, with their history of quality comedy, is the perfect first step towards this expanded commitment.”

On December 16, 2009, The Second City celebrates 50 years of cutting edge satiric revues as well as the launching pad for generations of comedy superstars. The Second City continues to develop the leading voices in comedy while touring the globe. Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy world’s best and brightest.  Their alumni list reads like a who’s who of American comedy, as it includes: Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, Harold Ramis, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, George Wendt, Martin Short, John Candy, Bonnie Hunt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz, Ryan Stiles, Jack McBrayer, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey and countless others.

Not only will an evening with The Second City provide audiences with the chance to see comedy stars in the making, but they will also have the opportunity to see absolutely hilarious satire and cutting-edge improvisation.  No topic or subject matter is off limits for The Second City.  If your parents asked you not to speak about it at the dinner table, chances are it will be made fun of in an evening with The Second City.

ATF normally performs at the Wood Theater in Glens Falls, but the demands of the tour and its one night only nature meant ATF needed to look outside of Glens Falls for a venue. As Fleischer states, “The Second City presented us with one possible date. We recognized that this was the opening weekend for The Phantoms, Glens Falls new professional hockey team, but we felt we could not afford to let this opportunity pass by. In addition there were requirements for The Second City performance that we could not easily provide in Glens Falls.” ATF chose the Paramount Theatre in Rutland because of the theatre’s amenities as well as its history of presenting comedy. Furthermore, as Fleischer acknowledges, ATF is a regional theatre attracting audience members not only from the Glens Falls/Lake George Region, but from 18 additional states.  “Presenting The Second City in Rutland allows us to introduce ourselves to an audience base which is only an hour away from Glens Falls. Our belief is that this expanded audience will come to Glens Falls next summer to see our regular summer season.” Fleischer also notes that performing in a venue outside of downtown Glens Falls reflects to the company’s early history when it performed in a wide variety of venues throughout the area including Lake George RV Park, The Sagamore, and elsewhere.

For those patrons who do not want to drive themselves to Rutland, ATF is arranging for a bus transport from the Glens Falls area to The Paramount Theatre. For more information on this bus service please call the ATF office at 518.798.7479.

The Second City’s 50th Anniversary Tour is a guest production at the Paramount Theatre by The Adirondack Theatre Festival (www.ATFestival.org) in conjunction with Applause Factory (www.applausefactory.com).
