Adirondack
Theatre Festival to open 10th season Broadway legend to come to Glens Falls after show’s sold-out runs on Broadway, in London, and only seven other North American cities
Entire ATF
season to be announced and on sale Sagamore Resort to sponsor 3-night Gala The Adirondack Theatre Festival is honored to open it’s 10th season with three gala performances of the show which the New York Times called “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Broadway history being made” when it ran on Broadway in 2002. Joined by a nine-piece orchestra, AT LIBERTY chronicles Elaine Stritch’s legendary 60 years in on Broadway which have included show-stopping performances in plays and musicals by Edward Albee, Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne, Noel Coward and countless others. The Adirondack Theatre Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary and open the new 280-seat Charles R. Wood Theater with this very special engagement which is exclusively available as an optional add-on to ATF’s 2004 season subscriptions until May 17. “I am simply unable to describe how spectacular it will be to celebrate our 10th Anniversary with this performance,” says ATF Artistic Director Martha Banta. “In my opinion Elaine Stritch is one of the most unique and talented actresses to appear on Broadway in the last and current century. In both musicals and dramas she personifies what makes theater special, especially the Broadway theater where she has held court for 60 years. When she helped launch ATF with an unforgettable performance of LOVE LETTERS with Jason Robards in 1995, she set a standard of excellence, uniqueness, and a slight sense of danger which I have strived to uphold on ATF’s stage ever since. Her willingness to return with this show to celebrate all that we have accomplished is a wonderful gesture.” ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY opened to rave reviews at the Public Theater in New York in early 2002, having been conceived with drama critic John Lahr and directed by George C. Wolfe. Its transfer to Broadway was the “don’t miss” event of that Broadway season, winning Elaine Stritch her long-overdue first Tony Award. The following winter the show played a limited engagement in London’s West End, and had a limited North American Tour in summer 2003. Elaine Stritch’s career on Broadway began in musical comedy in the early fifties. Early roles included feature performances in ANGEL IN THE WINGS and PAL JOEY, and standing by for Ethel Merman in CALL ME MADAM. Other Broadway shows include ON YOUR TOES, BUS STOP, GOLDILOCKS, SAIL AWAY, WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, COMPANY, SHOW BOAT, and A DELICATE BALANCE. In London’s West End she starred in Neil Simon’s THE GINGERBREAD LADY and Tennessee Williams’ SMALL CRAFT WARNINGS. Other stage credits include concert versions of COMPANY and FOLLIES at Lincoln Center and LOVE LETTERS with Jason Robards. Ms. Stritch made her film debut in the 1957 remake of A Farewell to Arms. She co-starred in the 1977 Alain Resnais film Providence and the award-winning BBC television series Two’s Company. Other film credits include Cocoon: The Return, Woody Allen’s September, Small Time Crooks, and Autumn In New York. Also Out To Sea with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, Krippendorf’s Tribe with Richard Dreyfuss, An Unexpected Life with Stockard Channing and Stephen Collins. Ms. Stritch’s television credits include The Cosby Show, 3rd Rock From The Sun, and Soul Man. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for the miniseries An Inconvenient Woman and won an Emmy for her recurring role in Law and Order. Ms. Stritch will be joined in Glens Falls by her Musical Director Rob Bowman. Mr. Bowman, who is also currently the conductor of CHICAGO, has conducted this show since its beginning. Other creators of ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY include Tony-Award Winning Director George C. Wolfe (Angels In America, The Tempest starring Patrick Stewart, On The Town, Topdog/UnderdoG) who is the Producer of the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival where ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY was originally produced as well as The New Yorker’s drama critic John Lahr who worked on the script with Ms. Stritch. Ms. Stritch’s appearance in Glens Falls will come just a few weeks after the premiere of a documentary about her by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Bob Dylan’s Don’t Look Back, The War Room and many other award-winning documentaries) on HBO. This documentary is tentatively scheduled to premiere on HBO in May 2004. The Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing will host Ms. Stritch and the show’s crew, and is the exclusive sponsor of the 3-night Gala. This 5-Star resort has been the jewel of the Lake George region for more than a century and is the natural hotel to host a star of Ms. Stritch’s stature. ATF subscriptions, with ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY available as an optional add-on for $80 or $65, will go on sale to the public April 1. Tickets for ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY will be available only with a $51 or $64 ATF season subscription until May 17. Any remaining tickets not sold to subscribers will be available to the general public on that date. The Thursday June 17 Gala performance of ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY will include a post-show celebration in Glens Falls City Park behind the Charles R. Wood Theater. All tickets for this performance will be $80 including the reception. Tickets for June 18 and 19 will be $65 and include a post-show champagne toast celebrating ATF’s anniversary. The Adirondack Theatre Festival’s tenth season will run June 17 – July 31 at the new Charles R. Wood Theater on Glen Street in Downtown Glens Falls. The entire season will be announced April 1, 2004. Discount season subscriptions for $51 and $64 will go on sale April 1. To join the Festival’s mailing list and receive a season brochure call 798-7479 or go to www. ATFestival.org.
