News from ATF - Contact: 518-798-7478 or atf@atfestival.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…April 23, 2001 Seventh
Adirondack Theatre Festival to open June 21 Season continues with NOCTURNE by Adam Rapp direct from Off-Broadway and world premiere pop/rock musical CHRYSALIS by ATF founder Gilles Chiasson ART to star Mark Setlock in his return to ATF where he premiered the comedy FULLY COMMITTED in 1998 prior to Off-Broadway The 2001 Adirondack Theatre Festival will open Thursday, June 21 with the comedy ART by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton. True to ATF's reputation for offbeat performance spaces including an RV Park campground and a vacant Woolworth Store, ART will be presented among the Renoirs and Rembrandts of Glens Falls' renowned Hyde Collection Art Museum. ART is a comedy which looks at the friendship of three men who must re-examine their relationship to each other and to the world when one buys an expensive modern painting. The play premiered in Paris in 1997 and went on to record-breaking runs on Broadway and in London's West End where it is still playing. Playing the role of Ivan for ATF's production of ART will be the comic actor Mark Setlock. This will be Setlock's fourth performance at ATF since its founding, with the last being his break-through solo performance FULLY COMMITTED by Becky Mode which had its premiere at ATF in 1998. Since then, FULLY COMMITTED has played Off-Broadway for two years (where it is now played by another actor) and Setlock went on to recreate his role as Sam, the harried restaurant reservation taker, in Los Angeles and Boston. Also in the cast will be Tyrone Mitchell Henderson who received rave reviews as the young Dr. Jason Posner in ATF's production of WIT last summer. ART will be directed by ATF's Artistic Director Martha Banta whose past ATF credits include Wit, Barbara's Blue Kitchen, Three Tall Women, The Family Business, and Times Of War. The play will take place in the Hyde Collection's intimate auditorium - seating is extremely limited. ATF has scheduled a special post-show discussion with Hyde Collection Director Randall Suffolk on Tuesday, June 26 to discuss "the art of collecting art". ART will be followed in the ATF season by NOCTURNE which will mark the region's premiere of a promising young playwright named Adam Rapp. When NOCTURNE received its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Boston last fall the New York Times said "there is an undeniable, cumulative power to the writing". The same production will open Off-Broadway at New York Theater Workshop in May, and the star of that production Dallas Roberts will recreate his leading role for a brief five performances at ATF. NOCTURNE is a coming of age story about an event in a young man's life which alters his history forever. NOCTURNE will be presented at ATF's former Woolworth Store location. ATF's third production will be the world premiere of CHRYSALIS, a musical which ATF has been developing for several years by ATF founder Gilles Chiasson. Chiasson is best known as an actor having appeared in the original Broadway casts of RENT, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, and CIVIL WAR. CHRYSALIS marks his debut as a musical theater writer and tells the story of a family during the Christmas holiday and the return of their son Chris who has a troubled past and a questionable future. CHRYSALIS features a pop/rock score and Mr. Chiasson credits the late Jonathan Larson, composer of RENT, as a major influence on his decision to write a musical with a contemporary score. CHRYSALIS will be presented at ATF's former Woolworth Store location. On select Wednesday and Thursday evenings, ATF will again present its late night cabaret at Terrio's Downtown Emporium restaurant across the street which was a popular and comfortable location last summer. In past summers these evenings have been devoted to acoustic songwriters, comedy teams, and classic Broadway cabaret. This year they will be a mixed bag of these styles to be announced at a later date. ATF's season will also include Children's Workshops for kids age 6-12 on Saturday afternoon during the Festival, post-show discussions, and a New Play Reading. The Adirondack Theatre Festival's seventh season will run June 20- July 21, with performances at the Hyde Collection (161 Warren St.) and the Former Woolworth Store (217 Glen St.). Discount season subscriptions are now on sale for $44 and $52 and can be ordered by calling 798-7479, mailing checks to ATF, PO Box 3203, Glens Falls, NY 12801, or going to www.ATFestival.org.
